Jenni

I have just read on Facebook that you have your knee replacement booked for April. A goal at last to work for.

My biggest piece of advice to you is to get a Leg-Up available at helpinghands.co.uk. This device was invaluable after the operation. Your knee will be too swollen and sore to swing around and this device hooks over the end of your foot and allows you to manoeuver your leg without putting strain on the knee. I could have kissed the person who invented this.

Take care

Jackie

Oooh thank you

It does look a helpful thing indeed
I haven't a lot of muscle strength and I know how battered you feel post surgery so any helps will be good

My carers want me on a hospital bed and all sorts

But I wonder if you can have a mattress riser installed
I don't know even if one exists!

Hi Jenni,

So pleased to hear you are to have a knee replacement, I hope it brings you much relief. You asked about a mattress riser, there is such a thing. My Dad had one installed when he was ill. It is placed under your own mattress and it has an electric pump to lift the mattress in place. You have a control to work like in a hospital bed, it works in the same way. Dad also had a foam mattress topper which looks like an egg box to prevent bed sores when lying.

Keep frozen peas in the freezer to help with pain and swelling, when Dad had his knee done he found this a godsend.

I hope you find this helpful, take care.

Hi Jenni , a tip I can give is after surgery they leave you in bed for a day or two so you have to use a bed pan , I was left for two days and as I had a spinal could not wee for hours but really needed too ! The bed pan was very hard to try and sit on and i had a bad time trying to stay on it as the muscle in the back of my leg that was operated on was in agony.Nurses would not leave the pan with me and this made it even more stressful , I have since seen a very useful pan that you put between your legs and it's moulded so you can wee into it ( sold in the chemist ).When I get my other knee done I am defiantly smuggling some in with me . ThumpUp hope this helps

Hi Jenni

I know you are starting Enbrel next week. Have you checked with orthopaedics whether they want the Enbrel to be stopped two weeks before surgery? Our hospital will not operate if you are on anti-tnf because of the increased risk of infection and slower wound healing. Their advice is stop two weeks before and restart two weeks after if all wounds healed.

By the time you go for surgery in late April the Enbrel will only just be starting to kick in. Once stopped it doesn't always kick back in when re-started. I know this to my cost, as you will remember, from knee surgery two years ago! Despite persisting with the Enbrel it simply didn't work again Sad

Don't mean to throw a proverbial spanner in the works but needs checking before starting Enbrel. It may be worth holding off until after surgery for a better resultSmile

Hi Jenni

I think we each have different experiences of replacement ops.

I was up and walking (with much assistance) into the loo approx 12 hours after surgery. My op finshed at 8.00pm on Wednesday and I was "got up" at 8.00am on Thursday by the physios and taken to the loo! I did have bed pans at some stage and they were not easy to move onto, so I think the idea of taking your shewee in is a very good one. I am sure the nurses will help you to use it instead of a bedpan if you ask them.

With regard to the bed head raiser: Steve bought me one and, for me, it really didn't do the job. I found it too cumbersome (there may be smaller versions you can get now). It was also very uncomfortable and made one heck of racket when it was pumping up and down. Would your local red cross shop, OT department etc be abe to rent you a hospital bed for the duration?

I agree with Lyn that maybe now is the time to ask about the effect Enbrel would have on the surgery. The last thing you need is to have to have the surgery postponed at the last minute because the surgeon won't operate.

Have they mentioned any dates yet?

Praying that things are a little easier at home now that Gems is safe againl.

Much love to you all

Jeanxx

I was just thinking that I hadn't heard anything from you lately Jenni. Good luck with the surgery on your knee. I hope it brings relief from pain and renewed mobility. Naomi x

Hello everyone

Not been on here for some time but I'm so very very pleased with my spangly new knee!

It's 6 wks post surgery, I've got more than a 90 degree bend now and can step about with my frame to the loo by myself, I can stand well too.

I go for my check in A couple of wks.
The reality of having had a knee replacement really hit me after coming round from the op and I was a bit in shock but with the pump in the pain relief stuff in my arm- the pain was well managed.

I'm going to have knee number 2 done and I'm not nearly so afraid

Im afraid my feet are rather wonky though and so the surgeons may have to look there....

Hmmm

Bit of a domino effect having surgery.

I'm not on this forum much, I tend to go on the facebook one.
If you want to join- find me on the nras fb page- jenni b-l
And send me a message

I can't post pictures in here but my scar is very neat indeed.

At 36 it felt like a huge commitment but for me, it's been a wonderful thing.

You do get lots of post op pain and the getting on and off bed pans was horrid. But the grim gnawing tooth ache sharp pain totally goes.

Definately worth getting the pain management flagged before you start.

Hope all are well

It is good to see you back on this site. I have seen you regularly on facebook and so glad the first knee is doing well and you will be on to your second.

Hope you don't mind my saying but I think it is good that you can be on this site as well as Facebook as I am sure there are many new members (and also existing) who will benefit from your experience, support and kindness. I personally have missed you on NRAS. Pictures are good for facebook but words can be just as powerful.

Good luck with the hands and feet and hope the results are not too bad.

Take care

Jackie
